About universities in France

The higher education system in France is excellent, although it is a bit unusual when compared to other countries.  Like most developed nations, France has a system of universities in which students can receive undergraduate, Masters Degrees and professional certificates, but while universities are considered the pinnacle of the education system in most other countries, in France, this is not the case.  In France, the apex of the educational system is represented by the country’s “Grandes Ecoles.”

Universities and Grandes Ecoles

In France there are nearly 100 universities, and it is here that the majority of students will go after graduating from the lycée, France’s equivalent to the American high school.  These universities offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate majors, and in terms of teaching and research, they are very comparable to most of the mid-range universities in other countries.

The “granddaddy” of higher education in France is the Grandes Ecoles.  These schools, which are typically very small and exceedingly selective, offer an advanced education to France’s student elite.  Grandes Ecoles are similar to the Ivy League schools in the United States, in that they are both very esteemed and cater strictly to those who have, and continue to demonstrate academic excellence.

Graduates of the Grandes Ecoles generally go on to become the leaders in French society, the senior civil servants or “haut fonctionnaires.”  This includes business leaders, engineers, physicists, politicians, military brass, and others.

When it comes to funding for higher education in France, the Grandes Ecoles are awarded a disproportionate piece of the pie, which even widens the gap between these small elite schools and the country’s universities.  Despite this imbalance, however, French universities do a marvelous job at preparing students in their field of study, and are generally considered some of the most efficient and effective schools in the world.

French Technical Institutes

For those who choose to pursue a more vocational track, the French Technical Institutes, or “Instituts Universitaires Technologiques” (IUTs) offer intensive studies in around 25 different career fields.  These programs typically span two years (a third year is required for the full professional license), and upon graduation students will receive job placement assistance in the industry of their choice.  Graduates are awarded a certificate of completion, which not only helps them secure future employment, but can also be applied towards higher education credits at one the country’s universities should they choose to seek more education.

Specialized Schools of Higher Education

The final component of the higher education system in France is the Specialized Schools of Higher Education.  These institutions focus solely on professional training in a number of different career areas.  Some of these schools include the Ecoles de journalism (school of journalism), the Ecoles d’art (school of art), and the Ecoles d’architecture (school of architecture), just to name a few.

The admission requirements for these specialized schools of higher education will vary depending on the field of study the student pursues, but generally an entrance exam is required in addition to successful graduation from a French lycée.
