Tanzania provides the population with the most important public utility services such as electricity, water supply and sewerage and sanitation, telecommunications, and transportation, which serve as part of the lifeline of the country. In the electricity sector, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) leads in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in the mainland. It also sells electricity to Zanzibar, its semi-autonomous archipelago, where its own utility firm sells and distributes electricity to the islands. With an installed capacity of 700MW, TANESCO serves most of the regions in the mainland through the grid system, except for the six isolated regions of Kajera, Kigoma, Rukwa, Ruvuma, Mtwara, and Lindi. The water sector services are focused on water resources management, rural water supply and sanitation, and urban water supply and sewerage under a national water policy implemented through the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), While EWURA’s functions are regulatory in nature, the national water policy’s most important aim is to provide the population with improved access to safe and clean water at all times. Telecommunications services are provided by various firms in the country, led by the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL), which is the country’s oldest and largest fixed-line telecommunications company. The services include telephone fixed lines, mobile cellular, internet and radio and television broadcast stations. Transportation in the country is serviced by roads and railways for land transport, ports and waterways vehicles for water transport, and airports for air transport.
