Education in Namibia

You are here: Countries / Namibia

The education in Namibia did not start of on smooth ground.  The education during the time when the apartheid movement was still in effect, the education in Namibia was directed mainly on the pale skinned individuals that were present in the nation.  When Namibia was able to attain its independence, that was the only time that the government started to provide funding for the natives themselves. There was much improvement in the educational sector when the independence was ratified. It was made by the government to be law. It was made compulsory for children between the ages of 6 to 16 to attend school in Namibian. The education that they have is provided for by the Namibian government however, the student’s parents is to front for the expenses of the uniforms, textbooks and miscellaneous fees of the school.  The government also has made provisions to extend education not only to men but also to the women. The government of Namibia has allocated a fair percentage of its budget to the education of its people. Since the increase in the educational budget, there has also been an increase in both enrollment of students and the improvement in the standard of education. There has also been an improvement in the ration of students per teacher, and it has contributed greatly to the learning capacity of each student. Despite the great improvements that it was able to achieve, there are still problems with the rural sectors of Namibia who are experience lack of funding and attention when it comes to education.
