Visa application requirements for Mexico

You are here: Countries / Mexico

There are generally 2 type Mexican Visas: immigrant and non-immigrant. An Immigrant Visa is issued for applicants who wish to acquire permanent residence in Mexico. On the other hand, a Non-Immigrant Visa is for those who intend to stay or visit Mexico for a provisional period of time for various purposes. It includes the following:

FMT (short-term) – issued for visitors staying in Mexico for 6 months or less. An FMT is usually given to tourists, students, business travelers and other foreigners with a short visit to Mexico. A fee of about $20 is charged to all tourists and business visitors that is included in your airfare.

FM3 (long-term) – if you intend to stay in Mexico for more than 6 months, then you should apply for an FM3 Visa. One of the things that the Mexican Consulate needs to verify is the applicant’s capability to sustain his/her living while in Mexico. Applicants are usually required to submit various documents such as bank account credit card statements and other proof of investment or income.

A foreigner who desires to reside in Mexico permanently or seeking Mexican Citizenship should apply for an FM2 Visa. Retirees, investors, artists, qualified professionals and sports personalities are typical applicants for this type of visa.

FM2 – it is advised to apply a FM2 visa while you are in Mexico and in possession of a FMT or FM3. FM2 visas are not processed in Mexican Consulates overseas. You have to hold a FM2 for 5 consecutive years before an “immigrant” status or Mexican Citizenship is issued. FM2 holders are entitled to full rights like any other Mexican citizens. Staying outside of Mexico for more than 2 years or for 5 years during a 10-year period will lose your permanent resident status.
