Visa application requirements for Maldives

The government of Maldives grants entry permit to visitors upon arrival at designated points of entry, based on the immigration requirements. No prior visa is required but certain requirements need to be fulfilled. The requirements include possession of a valid international travel document, a valid return air ticket, and a minimum of $30 per person per day or confirmed hotel reservation for the intended period of stay in the country. Exempted from these requirements are diplomats, UN personnel, government technical experts or those sponsored by Maldivians.

Various types of visa are granted to people entering the country. The tourist visa is granted to all nationalities upon arrival for a 30-day stay, and with extension which may be approved at the Immigration Head Office upon request. The resident visa is granted to people with a work permit issued by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, containing a resident permit for workers, that is valid only with a valid work permit.

A dependent visa is granted to a wife, husband or children of foreigners having a Resident Permit with a valid work permit. In this case, children applying for a dependent visa should be less than 18 years old.

A marriage visa is granted to foreigners intending to marry a Maldivian once the marriage is registered with a court of law.

The widow visa is granted to a foreign woman upon the death of her Maldivian husband, but such visa will be revoked as soon as the woman marries again.

A visa is not needed for business travel to Maldives but is issued at point of entry for US citizens, who are required to have a passport valid three months beyond the intended stay in the country, and to show proof of sufficient funds for the stay, as well as tickets and documents for return or onward travel.
