Electricity is provided by the government-run State Electric Company in terms of power generation, distribution and retail for about 46% of the population of Maldives. The company operates 15 power systems on 18 islands each having an independent power generation and distribution schemes. The largest system is operated in Male with installed capacity of 38.76MW 26-kilometer underground 11KV distribution network that provides electricity to 25,942 customers in the capital city. The company also maintains an Express Service to ensure fast power connection to its customers.

The Male Water and Sewerage Company, which was established in 1995, operates the water supply and sewage systems on seven islands including the capital city of Male, extending services to 40% of the population, and planning to operate on six more islands.

A number of agencies provide backup support to the Male water company. The Hitachi Plant Technologies Group of companies and the Singapore-based Aqua Tech Engineering and Supplies are involved in the operation of MWSC in water desalination projects to manufacture pure and ultra-pure water, upgrade water supply and sewage services, and help residents avoid spending too much money to buy safe drinking water. A supplementary water system project is also undertaken by the Red Cross for 15 islands to help ensure access to safe water during the dry season through community-managed desalination units that supplement harvested rain water.

The telecommunications services are provided by the Dhiveli Raajjayge Gudhun jointly with the government for the provision of GSM, telex, telephone, IDD, telegram, facsimile and internet, paging, maritime radio, and postage and courier services.

Transportation is served by interisland ferries, dhoni sea vessels and speed boats for sea transport; sea planes and helicopters for air transport; and cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles for land transport.
