You are here: Countries / Latvia

Located in Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and the countries of Estonia in the north, Lithuania in the south, Belarus in the southeast and Russia in the east. Latvia enjoys a maritime climate characterized by wet and long winters. Its western part or the coastal area experiences the maritime climate though its inland is more of the continental climate. In its capital city, Riga, the average temperature is -5°C. Highest temperatures are recorded in the month of July with 22°C while lowest temperatures are felt from January to February with -8°C. However, there are recently recorded more extreme temperatures felt by Latvia during the winter although it is not always the case.

Summers in Latvia are pleasantly warm and runs from the months of June to September. Some say it is the best time to travel to Latvia where temperature ranges from 20°C to 25°C during the day and 4°C to 15°C at night.

Winters in Latvia are long and extremely cold where temperatures at times can be below freezing. This season runs from the months of November up to April where temperature rarely rises above freezing. Snowfall is very much expected during the winter especially in the months of January and February where temperature in Latvia is coldest.

Due to Latvia’s proximity to bodies of water (Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga), relative humidity in the country reaches up to 80%. This is the main reason why the coastal area experiences a wetter climate than in the inland.
