About the Universities in Zimbabwe

The higher education system in Zimbabwe comprises of universities, technical and teacher training colleges. This includes nine publicly funded universities, 10 publicly funded colleges, 4 privately funded accredited universities or colleges and 3 privately funded accredited teacher training colleges. The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education is responsible for assuring the quality of higher education in the country. The Ministry of higher and tertiary education in Zimbabwe oversees the council, as well as, universities and colleges in Zimbabwe.

Undergraduate studies, Graduate studies and Doctorate studies are the three levels of university level education in Zimbabwe. There is also another stage in the higher education system- higher doctorate programs.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Zimbabwe

Students need to take the Cambridge School Certificate at the end of secondary school. Those who have achieved “A” level passes in the Cambridge School Certificate exam can enroll into an undergraduate program offered by the universities in Zimbabwe. Students who have completed their diploma with good grades may also apply to bachelor’s programs in the country.

Course unit model is followed by the degree programs in Zimbabwe. Many programs allow students to select courses from a range of options.

Bachelor’s degree programs in Zimbabwe are offered in various areas of study, including arts, science, education, commerce, engineering, medicine, architecture, agriculture, dental surgery and veterinary science. The length of bachelor’s degree programs is typically three years. However, some degree programs including Bachelor of Medicines take five years to complete.

Completion of undergraduate programs in Zimbabwe leads to a bachelor’s, bachelor’s honors or an Intercalated bachelor’s degree. Normally, programs in the field of arts, science, medicine and veterinary science lead to the conferment of a bachelor’s degree. Bachelor’s honors are awarded in agriculture, engineering and business studies. Intercalated bachelor’s degrees are awarded to those who have completed the programs in anatomy, veterinary anatomy, veterinary biochemistry and human physiology.

English is the medium of instruction in most bachelor’s degree programs in Zimbabwe. The academic year starts from August and ends by June.

Masters Degree Programs in Zimbabwe

Masters degree in Zimbabwe can be completed in two ways- by coursework and dissertation or by coursework and research. Master’s degree programs last for one to three years, depending upon the field of study. Those who have completed a master’s degree program by research thesis are eligible to get an M. Phil degree. Others who have chosen a master’s degree by coursework and project are awarded  an M.A or M.SC degree.

Doctorate Programs in Zimbabwe

PhD programs are offered by universities in Zimbabwe for students who want to pursue further research after completing their master’s degree. Doctorate programs require at least three years to complete. Research and presentation of thesis is required to obtain a doctorate.

D.Phil is a doctoral program offered by some universities in Zimbabwe. This program can be completed by a research thesis only.

A higher doctorate is awarded in faculties like law, science and humanities. The students need to submit published work to receive this degree.
