About the Universities in Greece

Higher education in Greece is centrally governed and funded. Higher education colleges in Greece can be broadly categorized into two sectors:

•    University Sector comprising Universities, Polytechnics, Schools of Fine Arts and the Open University
•    Technological Sector comprising Technological Educational Institutions/TEIs and the School of Pedagogic and Technological Education

Vocational training is imparted at State Non-University Tertiary Institutes such as the Higher Ecclesiastical School or the Merchant Marine Academies. Faculties in universities and Technological Education Institutions are divided into five broad disciplines namely, Humanities, Law & Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, Technological Sciences, and Sciences of Economy & Administration.

The higher education colleges in Greece have followed a two tiered system, similar to the Bologna system, since 1982. A typical academic year lasts from Sept 1 to Aug 31 and is divided into two semesters, each at least 15 weeks long, including two weeks of exams. Higher education in Greece is structured in three cycles, the first  covering a Bachelor’s degree equivalent (Ptychio), the second covering a Master’s degree equivalent (Metaptychiako Diploma Eidikefsis) and the third covering a Doctoral degree equivalent (Didaktoriko Diploma).

First Cycle/ Bachelor’s Degree in Greece

The first cycle typically lasts four years or eight semesters. However, they can also be five years long at polytechnics and certain departments, such as applied sciences departments (agronomy, forestry, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmaceutics) and those offering musical studies and Ekistics. Undergraduate courses at Medical colleges in Greece take six years for completion.

Admission to higher education universities in Greece requires candidates to successfully pass a national examination. This exam is centrally organized by the Education Ministry. Selection to a college depends on performance in the upper secondary school, score in the national exam and availability of seats. Furthermore, faculties and departments requiring specialized skills and knowledge conduct special exams (such as architecture, photography and music studies) or preparatory tests (such as health and sports) for military or police academies. Technological education institutions admit students who have successfully completed their upper secondary education from either a general lyceum, or technical vocational educational schools, and have also passed the relevant admission exams, determined by their choice of vocation.

Second Cycle/ Master’s Degree in Greece

The second cycle pertains to postgraduate studies and conferment of master’s degrees (MA or MSc). Postgraduate programs typically last one to two years and can have two, three or four semesters. Candidates successfully completing the first cycle become eligible for a master’s degree.

Third Cycle/ Doctorate Degree in Greece

Successful Master’s’s degree students can apply for further pursuing a doctoral degree. Completion of the third cycle results in a doctorate degree (Didaktoriko Diploma).

With the state funding higher education in Greece, students get significant financial support, with tuition and most other costs being waived off often. However, in recent times, universities besides the Hellenic University are being asked to charge students for operational expenses. There are various scholarship schemes available to undergraduate students. These are granted based on academic performance. Financial support is also made available to students pursuing master’s degrees in Greece or to those who are engaged in research.
