Cosmetology is the art of beautifying, through cosmetic means, the hair, face, skin, and nails. Cosmetology courses are being offered in vocational and technical schools. Students are being taught to properly operate tools and equipment in beauty salons and to apply different beauty techniques. There are trainings and workshops to keep cosmetologists up to beat in latest about the field. This makes them and their business live up the steep competition in this industry. Equipping oneself with necessary knowledge and training is next to passion in doing this vocation. In the United States, the average number of hours for full cosmetology program ranges from 1400 to 1600.

One must acquire necessary license before he/she will be able to render cosmetic services. Licensing requirements depend on area of specialization and differ from location to location. For one to acquire license in Cosmetology, it is important to successfully complete the training programs and recommended number of hours of immersion in beauty salons for the on-the-job training. Passing the qualifying exam is a must, as well. Technical skills play a significant part in practicing this vocation. For hair stylists, for instance, it is not enough to straighten a customer’s hair upon her request. The stylist should check for the time hair straightening was last made to the customer to ensure she will not go against the prescribed frequency of treatment – which could potentially damage the hair. The hair stylist is also responsible for possible allergic reaction of the customer to hair treatment. Just like any licensed vocation or profession, any malpractice would warrant revocation of license, which would, in turn, warrant inability to legally practice the field.

Cosmetologists need to have high level of social and interpersonal skills to work with and around people they may or may not know. It is their responsibility to make people who come to beauty salons feel comfortable and want to come back again and again – the ability to keep customers coming is what keeps the business or the career alive. What is exciting about this vocation is that the end objective is to make the customer as beautiful as possible – and this is why cosmetologists are also termed as ‘beauticians.’ When customers get satisfied with how the cosmetologist turned their look from point A to point Z, a tip is usually given on top of service charge.

Customers of Cosmetology services come from different walks of life. They may be middle-class individuals who regularly visit salons for manicure, pedicure, hair treatment sessions, eyebrow shaping, foot spa, body spa, or make-up for special occasions, etc. They may also be high profile individuals who have career that requires them to be “dolled-up” whenever they come to work. These individuals include TV personalities, business executives, and fashion models to name some. Some of them hire full-time cosmetologists just so they can have the service whenever they want to without falling in line in beauty salons. In addition, familiarity between customer and cosmetologist plays an important role in perfecting the customer’s desired look. This vocation also requires high level of physical energy. A hairdresser, for instance, may work on her feet for long hours. The longer one can stand physical stress, the more income one can expect.

There are various factors a cosmetologist should consider in doing the whole artistic work, including age of customer, theme/occasion, skin tone of customer, shape of customer’s face, the latest trend, and, of course, customer’s preferences. One should really be very apt to fashion and latest trends. Good cosmetologists are those who are really gifted with the ability to do the perfect matching of colors, hair style, and overall dolled-up aura. Customers sometimes do not have a definite style in mind. They just trust their cosmetologist to do what it takes to turn them into object of beauty.

As a graduate of Cosmetology course, there are various career options to choose from. One may start as Salon Receptionist or the one that first faces the customers that come to beauty salon. She should be very accommodating and well-groomed. As a receptionist, she is also tasked to provide consultancy to customers inquiring about treatments that they can avail for specific purpose. Another entry-level position is as Esthetician or the one taking care of facial skin treatment, body hair removals, foot or whole body spa, and massage. Being Nail Technician is another. She takes care of nail treatments, such as manicure and pedicure. Hairdresser, another specialist in the field, is responsible for hair works, such as trimming, straitening, styling, curling, etc. Makeup artist, on the other hand, is responsible for putting perfect blend of make-up on face.

One would not trust a bald man to give him treatment for baldness. The same is true for Cosmetology. A cosmetologist, more often than not, has to be an object of beauty herself for the customers to trust that she can indeed make them beautiful.
