Culinary Arts is the art of skilfully preparing, cooking, and presenting food and drinks that are pleasant not only to eyes but to palate, as well. Culinary courses typically involve food science, food sanitation, diet, and nutrition in addition to different techniques in preparing, cooking, and presenting food and drinks. Culinary Arts is also covered as one of the major subjects in Hotel and Restaurant Management programs. Most people who take up Culinary Arts do it for pursuance of career in this field, but there are also some who do it to fulfil personal hobby and interest.

“Culinarian” is the general term for practitioners of different aspects of this field, but the actual title varies depending on person’s role and function in the industry. The one who is tasked to prepare and cook food in restaurant is called “cook” or “chef.” They work in hotels, restaurants, airlines, cruise lines, fast food chain, companies offering catering services, and in cafeteria of corporate offices, hospitals, schools, etc. There are those who move towards the management side of this profession – the managers of Food and Beverages section of large food establishments. Food and beverage controllers, on the other hand, are responsible for the canvass and purchase of ingredients needed for cooking. They are usually employed by hotels, fast food chain, and other large food establishments. Design specialists are the ones contracted to come up with new, unique, and themed menu. They also take care of planning the physical layout of food establishments and designing kitchen protocols, especially for new or start-up food establishments. Research and development specialists handle the development of new products for consumption of commercial food establishments. Products include kitchen tools and equipment, new seasonings and ingredients, new methods of cooking, etc. These new products are then sold to food establishments through Salespeople, who are expected to have the sufficient knowledge of products to be able to demonstrate it accurately to potential clients and gain positive response. Entrepreneurs in this field are those who prefer to capitalize on building their own food establishment – large of small – than to be employees contracted by food establishments to do the job for them.

Food, being a need more than wants, is always on demand. People, after a tiring day at work, look forward to something to cheer them up - and one of the known ways is eating delectable food. Food is also the queen of every special event. Families take time and allocate money for some more-than-regular dining experience once in awhile. Women, being the ones typically in-charge of preparing meals at home, are almost required to learn how to cook. Maybe there’s pinch of truth in saying “the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” – which probably explains why more than half of total population in culinary industry are women.

Succeeding in any of the abovementioned potential careers requires great deal of passion in food – not necessarily in eating them but in preparing, cooking, and presenting them. Culinary professionals find pleasure and satisfaction when people cannot get any bigger appetite for the food and drinks they prepared. All in all, Culinary Arts is indeed a very “delicious” career!
