Care to know more about the human species? Anthropology will always be a relevant field of study for it delves on the humanity. No wonder this particular branch of study officially begun way back in the 16th century when a German Philosopher in the person of Magnus Hundt recognized the discourse as “Anthropology.” In particular, the etymology has been inspired by the Greek words “anthropos” and “logia” which mean “man” and “study,” respectively. Just as human is diverse by nature, the study is broken down into branches of learning such as biological anthropology, social anthropology, archaeological anthropology, and anthropological linguistics.

Objective anthropological study is one prominent facet of humanity inquiry. In particular, it deals with theories and evidence that have been proven via scientific experiments and researches. Under this descriptive category are biological and archaeological anthropology. Biological anthropology also known as physical anthropology is grounded on human evolution that explains human population based on the evolutionary timeline hence Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. On the other hand, archaeological anthropology or simply archaeology is concerned on the collection of artefacts excavated and dated via carbon dating showcased in museums. Both of these commonly involve gradual development of human species based on remnants of the past.

Subjective anthropological study is another equally interesting intellectual faculty. This commonly involves passive academic approach that likely involves extensive observation. Under this descriptive category includes social and linguistic anthropology. Moreover, social anthropology is focused on societal particulars such as kinship and ethnography branching out on societal matters such as laws, politics, and economy. Conversely, linguistic anthropology which can also be described as language study is concentrated in an array of human communication both verbal and nonverbal either chartered or unchartered as deduction of cultures. These disciplines commonly involve in depth analysis of behaviour to decipher cultural trend.

Anthropology is offered in over 1,500 colleges and universities. Specifically, it deals with an array of higher level programs ranging from undergraduate to graduate studies. Bachelor degree programs under Arts and Sciences include General Anthropology, Language and Semiotic Anthropology, Social Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, and Directed Minor on Environmental Anthropology. Postgraduate programs include Master’s Degree and Doctoral Decree on Cultural Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, and Archaeology. More often than not, Graduate programs offered are grounded to achieving Doctor of Philosophy diploma in which Master’s Degree may be obtained along the academic course.

There are varied career opportunities that await Anthropologists. Graduates can go into the teaching having taken some relevant courses on education. Bachelor degree holders can teach in junior schools while those with graduate school diploma can teach in colleges and universities. Another ideal niche is research which applies to diversified Anthropological studies. For instance, biological anthropologists can delve into scientific researches while cultural anthropologists can work on social researches. Either way, anthropologists are expected to publish results useful in opening new discourse which may support or contradict an existing idea. Public and private industries are likewise home to some other relevant professions such as forensic science specialist, journalist, museum administrator, international trader, marketer, banker etc.
