The term Hospitality Management covers both the area of work and the area of study that it represents. As far as the work aspect is concerned, it involves the management of hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and other institutions in the hospitality industry. The study of hospitality management is concerned with equipping the student with the skills required to undertake the above mentioned responsibilities.

As you can observe, the hospitality industry is extremely wide and diverse, for which reason managers in this field have to carry out a variety of challenging tasks. They would need to be able to fully organize the given hotel, restaurant, etc, by hiring employees, setting standards, managing the brand and image, and many others. Very often they would also have to gain an understanding of various cultures and countries as well as obtain a good view of different aspects of entertainment.

Personal Qualities

In order to be involved in hospitality management, it would help if you are a highly energetic, outgoing person who enjoys meeting and interacting with a lot of people on a daily basis. Some other qualities are:

  • Great communication and interpersonal skills
  • Creativity and enthusiasm
  • Great decision-making skills
  • Able to quickly solve problems and conflict situations
  • Able to work under pressure

Study Options

The degrees awarded by schools of tourism and hospitality management can include an Associate’s in Applied Science (AAS), a bachelor’s degree, a master’s, and even a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD). There are many courses offered by a great variety of schools, and normally there are specific colleges or universities that are well-known for their hospitality management programs. Usually these will concentrate on the operation of the business, and include customer service, regulations, food safety, advertising, finance, and management.

You would usually be able to specialize in certain courses once you have a better view of which area of hospitality management you like most. Do not forget that this profession requires a lot of hands-on experience and a school that has achieved a balance between theory, practical subjects, and placement opportunities would be best suited for any student interested in this field.

Career Options

Schools that offer programs in hospitality management often have very good career centers that help graduates place jobs after graduation. Job options for these graduates are quite diverse, ranging from food service to working on a cruise ship. There are positions such as receptionists, waiters, park administrators, and casino personnel that require closer interaction with customers; and others, like chefs and planners that are the so-called ‘backstage’ options.

As you can see, choices are varied, and if you don’t have the initial resource to start your own business there are still very good prospects to reach management positions. On the other hand, if you have specialized in the culinary arts you can more easily establish your own business by taking out a loan, for example. The opening of a travel agency is another great choice that does not require too much financial resource.
