A human activity that involves the flying of man-made aircrafts and consists of individuals, organizations and other regulatory bodies is called Aviation. People from different cultures have built-up machineries that travel through the air, from the first projectiles such as stones and spears, to the more complex floating or aerodynamic devices mirrored in the mechanical pigeon of Ancient Greece, Archytas; Australia’s boomerang; the Kongming Lantern as well as the kites.

Ancient legends have been told about humans being able to take flight such as the story of Icarus or the winged flights of Eilmer of Malmesbury that is believed to have occurred during the 12th century, 17th century’s Abbas Ibn Firnas and the Passarola of Bartolomeu Lourenco de Gusmao. Modern Aviation began with the hot air balloon laid out by the Montgolfier brothers in November 21, 1783. There was limited potential with the balloons because it was only able to travel with the speed of the wind. It was Jean-Pierre Blanchard who devised the first human-powered dirigible in the year 1784. Since then, humans have continued to make developments and innovations with aircrafts.

There are different types of Aviation and they are as follows:

Civil Aviation which consists of all non-military flying. Under Civil Aviation are General Aviation which includes non-scheduled private and commercial civil flying and scheduled air transport which includes the aircraft and aircraft manufacturers. Small aircraft manufacturers cater to the general aviation market with their aircrafts primarily used in private aviation and flight trainings.

Military Aviation serves the purpose of giving service to its country whenever it needs it.

Various courses are being offered in the field of Aviation. Some of the courses being offered are MBA – Aviation Management; Bachelor of Applied Science in Aviation; and Master of Aviation Management to name a few.

MBA – Aviation Management typically requires one and a half years of study. It integrates the skills necessary to solve and carry out creative solutions, improve leadership skills as well as communication and interpersonal skills, and to hone managers who will be results-oriented in terms of the aerospace industry and global air transport.

Bachelor of Applied Science in Aviation requires three years of study since it is a degree program suitable to train the graduates for occupations in the scope of operational management and planning responsibilities. This includes operations such as airport landslides, airport airside as well as airport planning, maintenance management of aircrafts its guidance and supervision; and employment options for the transition of skilled pilots of commercial airlines to the management of airline operations. The program encompasses the specific planning methods and management important to the context of the aviation industry; putting into account the risks involved; the human factors; the setting of the industry and other important subject areas.

Master of Aviation Management only requires one year of schooling for the middle-level managers in the Aviation industry with the necessary backup of undergraduate education to enhance and benefit both the company in which they are currently employed and themselves with a bigger advantage over their competition in the industry.
