Forestry Study Programs

Level: Undergraduate Bachelors     Location: Villanueva de la Cañada

For the last decade or so, the interests of students to take up Forestry courses has not really been picking up as computer programming and related courses have been luring students like a mouse to a cheese. Also, on the last decade or more, illegal logging has heightened that it really threatens the last vestiges of virgin forests in the world. But because science has found out that the trees and forests do indeed play a vital role in the ecology of a place or the planet per se, Forestry courses has suddenly become a course that could make a difference in the world. Because of the damages being done to the environment due to forest denudation, grants have suddenly become available to those serious in this field.

Basically, the undergraduate course of Forestry will equip students with necessary skills to understand how forests thrive as an ecosystem and the underlying wild life that depends on the forest for the purpose of preserving them and as benefitting from the available resources they may provide.

Once enrolled, students will become immediately become a warrior on the side of the environment as all the issues, legal and moral will be brought forward to attention from Day 1 of classes. The course of Forestry is actually a multi-discipline course as students will be exposed to concepts from botany, zoology, chemistry, economics, agronomy and a little bit of computer science as there is actually software now specifically designed to aid Forestry professionals.

Forestry normally has different majors students can pursue. The majors are Forest Biological Sciences, Forest Environmental Resources Management, Silviculture and Agroforestry, Forest Products, Social Forestry and Forest and Natural Resources Governance.

Forest Biological Sciences will deal mainly with the flora and fauna in a forest environment from insects to fungi to the trees themselves which is indeed a very big subject matter on its own. Perhaps, a scientist of the forest would be occupied in his lifetime to cover a major forest on lichens alone.

Forest Environmental Resources Management is the major that will be more focus on how to utilize the forest as a source of raw materials, a wildlife park or as an integral part of the area in a sustainable capacity.

Silviculture and Agro-forestry is another branch of Forestry that is equally important because it deals with the control and growth of specific species of trees and studying of the quality of soils that supports the trees. There are some trees that may not grow as they should because the type of soil may not be able to hold them up as they grow too tall or that some trees if left to grow on its own will promote the growth of specific insects or fungi which might alter the balance of the ecology.

Forest Products is another major that is more on the processes involved that forest products might be subjected to. Kiln drying and other drying methods were more or less developed using concepts from this branch of Forestry science. Construction of wood bridges, paper making would be a cinch for majors of this course because timber mechanics, wooden structural analysis and wood chemistry are among the subfields of studies they would be delving on for the purpose of discovering more forest-based products.

The last major study for Forestry science is Forest and Natural Resources Governance. Land and natural resources are always a hot political topic and so Forests as a natural resource and governments are always closely associated. This is the area of study that will deal with project planning, community development and dealing with appropriate government agencies.

Opportunities for graduates of this course have actually jumped back to the limelight as more research grants are investing on researches on understanding forest wildlife and biodiversity. There have also been a number of adventure tourism spots that is currently very popular and bringing in money to the economy. To those who really are after the big bucks in this field, earning a PhD degree is a must in order to land those million-dollar research grants.
