The study of Logistics is quite in demand today and very timely as in today’s modern society, it is very important to meet the requirements and expectations of everyone in the industry. At that, there are a growing number of universities and educational institutions which offer Logistics course programs. This just proves that logistics, at present, is an essential part of today’s society.

Logistics is defined by the management of flow of information, goods, and other resources from the origin to the consumer in order to meet the requirements of the clients/customers. It is the organization of business operations such as the acquisition, storage, transportation and delivery of the goods/services along the supply chain. In logistics, many things are involved such as the integration of information, warehousing, material handling and packaging. In the early years, logistics was once used only in the military, as to how and when to move their resources (armory, supplies, facilities) to the places they are needed. The strategy in a good military logistics flow is to maintain one’s supply chain while upsetting that of the enemy’s. However, because of the demand in organized flow of goods and services, logistics now includes warehousing, purchasing, transport, and planning as well.

Business logistics deals with the business planning framework for the management of the company’s materials, goods, information, and capital flows. This includes the information, communication and control systems that each organization use which are required of every company in today’s business environment. Subject topics in business logistics include Production Logistics, Transportation Logistics Management, Forecast Planning, Transportation and Delivery, Logistics Management, Manufacturing, Warehousing Techniques, Network Designs – Problems and Solutions, Inventory Management and Inventory Models, Information Technology and Intelligent Transportation Systems in Supply Chain Management, Distribution Strategies, Distribution Management, Storage and Handling Systems and Decisions, Logistics Audit and Control, Security in Logistics, Culture Change, Customer Service, Financial Flow in the Logistics Channel, Order Processing and Information Systems, and Warehouse Management and Control Systems.

Logistics is only a small part of the supply chain, and this specifically deals with the optimization process of the storage, movement, and location of one’s resources from the point of origin to the point of consumption or the final consumer. A steady logistics flow system is usually maintained and maximized even to attain the following goals for the company: (1) to avoid shortages in resources; (2) to minimize transportation costs; (3) to reach minimum time to obtain resources or minimum total storage of an object.

In the simplest terms, logistics is all about moving the right item to the right place at the right time in the right condition to the right customer. People who do this are called logisticians, or those who are professional logistics practitioners. Students who are graduates of a Logistics program in college may apply for jobs in Project Planning, Distribution, Supply Chain Management, Warehousing, Management, and in most companies who need logistics in their operations. Those who are more experienced in the field may be employed as consultants for logistics and transportation companies.
