In the most basic terms, geography refers to the study of maps. However, modern geography is a much larger and more complex field than this simple description would suggest. Geographers today  study the distribution of people, animals, resources, and various other things across the surface of the earth. Because geography is a rapidly-evolving field, growing and changing at the pace of technology, there are a vast array of specializations and sub-fields to choose from. Options range from creating the next generation of up-to-date roadmaps to plotting the movements of migratory birds across vast differences. If you’re interested in using computers to create dynamic digital maps, look into GIS (Geographic Information Systems), a new field that uses computers to generate, process, and present geographic data. GIS is making in-roads in industries as diverse as city planning, economics, biology, and environmental science. Although it is not offered as an undergraduate major at many institutions, there are several excellent graduate programs in GIS that will provide ideal training for turning your love of geography into a career.

Career Options

Any information that can be put on a map is likely to be of value to someone, so there are many jobs for geography majors and GIS students. Some involve working out in the field – surveyors and surveying technicians are the men and women who go out and actually collect data about the world and what’s in it. If you like spending time outside, working with your hands, and handling advanced technology, surveying is an excellent job option. At the other end of the spectrum,  GIS analysts take the data collected by surveyors, taggers, and even ordinary people with smartphones, and try to interpret it in a way that is valuable in the real world. They may use maps to help guide the decisions of policymakers, or advise businesses in the private sector.
