Study in Berlin, Germany

Study in Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a bustling city of 4.5 million people that has for centuries been the heart of Germany’s vibrant intellectual, financial, political, and cultural life. Its large size and fast pace make it a great destination for city-lovers. Also, like much of Germany, it displays a fascinating combination of modern convenience and efficiency with old-world charms and a rich historical texture that makes it a city well-worth visiting for a huge variety of different kinds of people. It also has an extremely active nightlife, which makes it popular with students and younger people who want an exciting place to have fun.

Despite its somewhat overwhelming size, Berlin is not terribly difficult to navigate. The public transportation system is excellent, and covers all areas of the city – renting a car, however, is not recommended. The S-Bahn trains are especially efficient as a method of transportation. These trains, part of an extremely efficient and clean system, will take you to any neighborhood where you need to be in a very short time. Buses, trams, and suburban trains (the U-Bahn) also operate within the city and its surroundings. Within the city center, walking is also a possibility, and can be quite pleasant outside of rush hour times. However, the city is far too big to allow residents to rely on walking as their sole mode of transportation.

There’s plenty to do in Berlin, ranging from nighclubs and fine dining to restaurants, concerts, and museums. In fact, right at the center of the city is a small island in the middle of the river called museumsinsel or Island of the Museums. Museumsinsel comprises several world-class museums of culture, history, and art from all over the world. It also has the Berlin Cathedral, an extremely impressive green-domed structure with a large and very pleasant garden area. There are also several places to go for panoramic views of the city – the best is the Bundestag, or old parliament building, which has an excellent observation tower.

The language of Berlin is, of course, German, and studying the German language brings large numbers of students to Berlin each year. The German spoken here is considered to be unaccented, which makes it ideal for foreign students, and the city’s prominence as the great symbol of German culture adds an extra advantage to studying there. While it is possible to get around in English – most people, especially younger Germans, can speak with considerable fluency – it is still considered polite to learn at least a few German phrases. Germans are very proud of their language, and may feel insulted if you do not at least show some effort to speak it as well as you can.

Berlin is one of the primary transportation hubs for all of Europe, so getting a direct train to almost anywhere is very easy. This is yet another part of what makes it so popular with students. From Berlin, you can get an easy train ticket to Scandinavia, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and another of other destinations in various parts of Europe.
