Study in Anchorage, The United States

Study in Anchorage, The United States

Tourists and students who come to America all too often overlook Alaska. Cold, remote, and seemingly isolated from the rest of the United States, this seems like the last place anyone would want to go to get an education. Those who take a closer look, however, often find that this unique state in the far North has a charm and appeal all its own, particularly the state capital of Anchorage.

Anchorage's historic roots lie shrouded in mystery–it was founded in the late 18th or early 19th century by Russian settlers, and grew steadily as a result of the discovery of precious metals nearby. After becoming a part of the United States, the city saw an influx of immigrants drawn by the allure of gold. Ever since, as rail, sea, and air travel have become more sophisticated, Anchorage has been viewed as the bridge between Alaska and the rest of the United States.

Like the state that it represents, Anchorage's best feature is its pristine natural beauty. The city is framed by the icy blue waters of the North Atlantic on 2 sides, and on the 3rd by a towering wall of mountains unblemished by human settlement. This wilderness, scattered with crystal-clear lakes and sweeping vistas, is easily accessible from the city and affords superb opportunities for recreation and research. It is also considered to be one of the most picturesque destinations in the entire United States. As in the rest of Alaska, it is clear that nature, not mankind, holds sway in the countryside. In fact, downtown Anchorage itself is often visited by spectacular wildlife including moose and bears!

Those who find all this natural ruggedness a little overwhelming can take refuge in the warmth and comfort of downtown Anchorage. Separated by the water and the mountains into several distinct mini-cities, Anchorage can often seem like a much smaller town, and visitors sometimes forget that they are in a state capital. Still, despite its small-town feel, Anchorage is home to a wide variety of museums and cultural attractions, most of which accentuate Alaska's unique historical and cultural tapestry. There is never a shortage of things to do in Anchorage, even for its year-round residents who stay through the cold, dark winters.

While typically not thought of as a college town, Anchorage is home to 4 institutions of higher learning. These vary widely in size and teaching philosophy, from the large public campus of the University of Alaska at Anchorage to the small and unusual Alaska Pacific University. APU is famous for its unique programs in outdoor studies, its travel courses, and its focus on active and experiential learning. Anchorage also boasts a career college designed to meet the needs of adults with full-time jobs.

With its friendly residents, its location in the midst of the stunning Alaskan landscape,  and its unique educational opportunities, Anchorage is a perfect place to go if you’re looking for an experience unlike any other.
