Tsinghua University is a research university located in Beijing, China, and one of the nine members of the C9 League, an alliance of nine universities in mainland China, which also includes Peking University, Harbin Institute of Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiao Tong University.

The institution was originally established in 1911 under the name "Tsinghua Xuetang” and has been renamed several times since then: from "Tsinghua School," which was used one year after its establishment, to "National Tsinghua University" which was adopted three years after the foundation of its university section in 1925. With its motto of Self-Discipline and Social Commitment, Tsinghua University describes itself as being dedicated to academic excellence, the well-being of Chinese society and to global development.  It has been consistently regarded by most domestic and international university rankings as one of the top higher learning institutions in mainland China.

History

The early faculty of Tsinghua University placed great value in the interactions between Chinese and Western cultures and the sciences and humanities fields. Tsinghua scholars Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque and Zhao Yuanren, renowned in China as the "Four Tutors" in the Institute of Chinese Classics, advocated this belief and had a profound impact on Tsinghua's later development.

In 1937, due to the Resistance War against the Japanese Invasion, Tsinghua University was forced to move to the city of Kunming and join with Peking University and Nankai University, thus forming the Southwest Associated University in that same year.  The University was moved back to its original location in Beijing after the war.

Subsequent to the founding of the People's Republic of China, Tsinghua University was molded into a polytechnic institute focusing on engineering.  This was part of the nationwide restructuring of universities and colleges undertaken in 1952.  In November 1952, Mr. Jiang Nanxiang became the President of the University and would go on to make significant contributions to the school, leading Tsinghua to become the national center for training engineers and scientists with an emphasis on both professional proficiency and personal integrity.

Since China opened up to the world in 1978, Tsinghua University has developed at a breakneck pace into a comprehensive research university. At present, the university has 14 schools and 56 departments with faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. The University now has over 25,900 students, including 13,100 undergraduates and 12,800 graduate students. As one of China’s most renowned universities, Tsinghua has become an important institution for fostering talent and scientific research.

Philosophy

The educational philosophy and aim of Tsinghua University is to "train students with integrity." Among the over 120,000 students who have graduated from Tsinghua since its founding are many outstanding scholars, eminent entrepreneurs and great statesmen who are remembered and respected by their fellow Chinese citizens.

With the motto of “Self-Discipline and Social Commitment” and the spirit of “Actions Speak Louder than Words”, Tsinghua University is dedicated to the well-being of Chinese society and to educational development around the world.

International Student Information

Tsinghua University has a long tradition of actively developing strategic partnerships and collaborations with prestigious universities, international organizations and enterprises throughout the world. The University sponsors high-level academic exchanges, joint programs, international conferences and other international activities. Student exchanges are encouraged to cultivate talented students with global vision. Tsinghua University also plays an important role among global higher education organizations, promoting multilateral cooperation and organizing many academic and cultural activities abroad to deepen mutual understanding between people from different countries and regions.

Student Exchange

With the continuous development of higher education, the quantity and quality of globalized student education programs has become one of the most important features of Tsinghua University.

To implement the university's strategy of globalized student education, Tsinghua University continues to develop cooperative relationships with prestigious universities, research institutions and enterprises around the world, and cooperates with the CSC programs and the various university’s schools and departments.

The university hosts a number of international students each year—students pursuing degree programs, joint education studies, joint research programs, short-term exchanges, summer internships, and international conferences. A total of nearly 5,000 students from Tsinghua University were sent overseas in 2013 to schools such as Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, Oxford and other world class universities.

Collectively, the international exchange programs have received favorable comments from faculty and students and obtained strong support from the University's offices, schools and departments, which has helped to lay a solid foundation for further extension and expansion of globalized education programs.
