The Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal is a publicly owned hospital and health education center, dependent on the Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid and integrated into the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS). Since the beginning of its activities in 1977, the institution has sought to provide users with an efficient and high-quality service. The health center cultivates the three aspects of a quality hospital in its class: focused patient care, teaching and research. The major difference between this institution and others of its kind is the amount of research that takes place—research that is sponsored by the national government and carried out by the hospital’s excellent Research Department. This peculiarity makes the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal one of the most nationally and internationally recognized centers for biomedical research.

Health Education at the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal

The Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal has a long tradition of providing postgraduate health education and training.  Since 1987, the hospital has been affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alcala de Henares, at which students receive their undergraduate education.

Students who earn their undergraduate credentials in a pre-medical studies discipline, such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy or physiology, are eligible to pursue medical and nursing internships at the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal.  There students can earn their post-graduate degree or certificate by studying in the center’s Teaching Pavilion, a unique wing of the hospital that is staffed by 15 tenured professors and over 120 Associate Professors in the Health Sciences.

General Eligibility Requirements

Students who are considering attending the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal must meet the following general requirements:

• Vocation.  All students must demonstrate a desire to pursue medicine, nursing or another field in the health sciences as a vocation
• Work capacity. All students must demonstrate the ability to handle the demanding work load associated with earning a post-graduate degree in the health sciences
• The ability to work as part of a team. The breadth of knowledge required of health professionals and the current health care structure makes it imperative that individuals are able to work as part of a team.

Objectives

The objectives outlined by the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal include:

• Promote quality teaching and strive for the introduction of new teaching techniques.
• Promote quality research in the Ramón y Cajal Hospital’s Research Branch in the various experimental and clinical epidemiological areas.
• Conduct unbiased clinical trials for outside firms
• To define a policy of Research and Development for use in developing the hospital’s educational offerings and objectifying the lines of research that can be incorporated as a core strategic element to the hospital’s portfolio of services.
• To improve management efficiency through effective coordination of resources, devoted to teaching and research.
• To enlarge external resources for Research and Teaching.
  

Research at the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal

The research tradition of the "Ramón y Cajal" Hospital began at the time of the institution’s founding.  The fact that the hospital has maintained a research department since its inception, a place in which experimental surgery techniques, related clinical laboratory services (Endocrinology, Nephrology, Internal Medicine) and central services (Microbiology, Hematology, Immunology, Pathology, Humana) have been studied, demonstrates that research has been a corporate objective of the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal for decades.

The Research branch of the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal works closely with the medical education side of the hospital and the two have maintained a close relationship since 1998.  Due to the complexity and individuality of many of the administrative activities of research, the research branch has set up support structures to help coordinate the various activities of the branch and to simplify certain procedures so as to involve the largest possible percentage of student participation. The support structures are coordinated by the Medical Education and Research departments, in collaboration with the Office of Management and the various branches that comprise it.

The Research Department consists of four primary services Biochemistry (Research, Bio-Electromagnetism, Neurobiology and Histology), Neurophysiology, Laboratory Services, and Experimental Surgery. In addition to these services, the research department conducts multiple studies pertaining to the biomedical and health sciences—projects that are externally funded for the purpose of clinical trials.
