Undoubtedly Panama Canal is tops in tourist destinations in Panama. Tourists are interested to know why it is called the “8th Wonder” of the world for a small country bordered by two great oceans. While the country is itself a natural tourist spot situated on the isthmus connecting North and South America, the Canal, a ship passageway of 51 miles, is the work of man that has become an engineering feat in the world. Also considered as king of tourist attractions, the Canal stretches from the Atlantic Coast near Panama City. The Canal facilities include a Visitors Center housing a museum, where the submerged relics used in building the Canal can be seen. Visitors can also arrange with the management for a tour of the Canal.

The historical Panama City has the Panama Viejo and Casco Viejo districts. Panama Viejo is the site of the founding of the city by the Spaniards, while Casco Viejo contains historical buildings also built by the Spaniards, The Metropolitan Park is also found in the city to offer tourists with the world’s only rainforest with native flora and fauna. Added to this rainforest park is the Camino de Cruces National Park that offers great hiking trails for all hiking enthusiasts.

The Azuero Peninsula, which juts out of Panama’s southern coast, is cherished by the people as the cradle of their Spanish heritage and folkloric traditions. Home to the best Carnaval celebrations, it covers the provinces of Herrera, Los Santos and Veraguas, offering beautiful beaches, soft rolling hills and towering coastal mountains.

Pearl Islands, a 15-minute airplane ride from Panama City, is CBS’s Survivor location offering picturesque waters, lush vegetations and fascinating marine life where thousands of pearls have been found, including the 31-carat, 400-year old Pelegrina pearl now owned by Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, and whose previous owners include a Queen of Spain, a French Emperor, and an English Queen.
