Visa application requirements for Malawi

You are here: Countries / Malawi

A Malawi visa is a stamp or endorsement placed by officials of the country on the passport of a traveler to allow him/her to visit the country. The most important types of the Malawi visa are the tourist and business visas. A tourist visa is required for a tourism trip, visit to relatives or friends in the country, or attendance to technological, cultural and scientific meetings or seminars, while a business visa is needed for a business trip with an exception on trips that involve technical assistance services.

A government travel warning, however, still exists for visitors to the country. This warning advises of a global risk about indiscriminate terrorist attacks on civilian targets and places which foreigners usually frequent, against traveling after nightfall, or riding a mini-bus or pickup truck, and against visiting certain places in Lilongwe, the country’s capital, where visitors have been victims of attacks.

To acquire a visa, all travelers are required of a passport valid for at least three months beyond the date of entry, a ticket for return or onward travel, and enough funds for the duration of stay in the country. While certain nationals are not required of a visa to enter the country, such as those of the United States and United Kingdom, among others, the nationals of the following countries are required of a visa: Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Slovak Republic, Estonia, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania.
