The Weather and Climate in Iceland

You are here: Countries / Iceland

The country has moderately mild coastal weather. In Reykjavik which is the capital of Iceland, the average summer temperature in July is 10.6°C but can reach as high as 25°C at night. The average temperature in January is around 0°C. In spite of its tremendous situation in North Atlantic, climate in Reykjavik is not as cold as anticipated because of the passing temperate waters of the Gulf Stream that normalized the weather. Reykjavik is also an extremely rainy city and out the year it obtains 213 rainy days. The air is hygienic and free of contamination.

Iceland’s wettest part is in the south although snow is rare. The coastal regions have a tendency to experience winter storms but thunderstorms are very rare. The southern part experiences only 5 storms every year. Generally, they are usual in late summertime and produced by warm air masses arising from the continent. Typically lightning can be notice in relation with ash plumes exploding from the island’s volcanoes. In the middle of November up to the end of January, Iceland encounters a few hours of daylight every day. Frequently, the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are noticeable in autumn and early winter.

The required clothes in winter months are medium to heavyweights. While in warmer months lightweights are recommended. Waterproofing is still suggested for the whole year.
