The Weather and Climate in Georgia

You are here: Countries / Georgia

The climate in Georgia is not constant for the whole country. Though it is just a small country, climate is very diverse and varies from west to east, north to south. Climate is sub-tropical and warm in the east and Mediterranean in the west. In the eastern part of Georgia, climate is dryer as compared to the western part where climate is more moderate with moist air as it is near the Black Sea. The Greater Caucasus mountain range blocks the cold air from the north, and the Lesser Caucasus mountain range does the same in the south.

Precipitation is present throughout the year though it is wettest and heaviest in the autumn and spring. However, there is relatively low rainfall in the plains as humidity is lower, compared to the areas along the Black Sea coast. Humidity is high in the coast as well as in the Kolkhida lowlands where there is heavy precipitation. In the highlands, precipitation is at times twice that of the amount of rainfall in the inner areas and in the plains.

Summers are very hot especially in the month of July, though the nights can be a bit cold in Georgia especially in the low lying plains. During the winter, snows and ice are present all year-round in the Alpine and high areas and moderately cold in the plains.

In Georgia’s capital, T’bilisi, the average temperature is 13oC. The area experiences an average of 3 hours of sunlight in a day during winter (December to January) and 8 hours during the summer (July to August).
