The electricity service in Bhutan is handled by the Bhutan Power Corporation Limited, which is one of the three entities operating under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The main functions of the Corporation center on the distribution of electricity throughout the country and ensuring that such electricity, which must be reliable and adequate within the means of customers, is available to all citizens under its coverage. Operating side by side with the Corporation is the Department of Energy which is tasked to coordinate the activities for the energy sector, and the Bhutan Electricity Authority performs regulatory functions under the Department of Energy.

The country’s water supply and sanitation service is beset with certain problems. These include the drying up of water sources, lack of ownership, financial constraints, lack of proper hygiene practices, lack of trained personnel and restrictive traditional rights to water sources. Mostly affected by these problems are those in the rural areas where most of the water drinking facilities are already non-functional. To combat these problems, the government is implementing a project that would provide the entire population with greater access to safe water and promote health and hygiene especially in the villages.

The DrukNet and the Bhutan Telecom are the leading entities that provide telecommunications services in the country, such as telephone, mobile cellular phones, radio and television broadcast stations, and Internet services. For transportation, Druk Air is the only airline in the country that operates international flights and an international airport in the city of Paro.
