Food, eating habits and cusine of Brunei Darussalam

One of the things that you will surely love in Brunei is the diverse food that you can have.  Great food is everywhere.  Throughout the day, you can find a great range of delicacies no matter what region you are in.  Western foods are mostly available inside the hotels while there are many fast food chains scattered around the country.

A typical food in Brunei is quite similar to the ones you will find in Malaysia and Singapore, so rich and spicy.  Since Brunei is predominantly Islamic, pork and alcohol are not very popular.  What’s popular are rice and noodles together with meals that they can serve with them.  In fact, many ethnic Chinese living in Brunei has greatly influenced their cuisine.  Not to be outdone, Malay cuisine is also widely available with most dishes being spicy.  You can also treat yourself to a typical Indian cuisine all over the country.

One of Brunei’s national specialties is called Daging Masak Lada Hitam, or a dish of spicy beef cooked until the beef is very tender with potatoes and beans.  For their seafood specialty, they have Udang Sambal Serai Bersantan which is actually chili prawns with coconut milk served on top of rice and vegetables on the side.  They also have one specialty for chicken that is called Serondeng Pandag which is fried chicken with garlic and then wrapped in pandan leaves.

If you want to be adventurous in Brunei, try out the excellent food at the hawker centers.  There you can find satay, noodle-type dishes, roasted chicken, grilled seafood and seafood hotpots.
